There are a number of things I hate about being gluten free. I get pangs of nostalgia from just thinking about a decent chip buttie on white bread with lashings of butter; a steaming takeaway pizza with melted cheese as hot as molten lava; a mouth burning Gregg’s sausage roll; and relaxing at home on the sofa with a Crinkle Crunch biscuit and a nice stewed cup of tea. I often find myself stealing a glance at people as they devour a thick slab of chocolate cake and find my heart beat increasing and my palms getting sweaty as I grubbily thumb through home baking recipe books as though they were straight from the top shelf.

Thinking about it, it is also no surprise I’ve lost weight since I cut out the gluten as I nice leafy salad isn’t quite the same as a battered covered fish. Tubby issues aside I no longer have to feel deprived at lunchtimes thanks to Starbucks. They have only gone and done the unthinkable and joy of joys brought out a gluten free tuna sandwich. If you don’t believe me you can see for yourselves here http://starbucks.co.uk/en-GB/_Food/Starbucks+Sandwiches+-+Starbucks+UK.htm. And you know what it is actually mighty fine. It is served on Genius bread, which is about the best gluten free bread range out there, and stays moist due to a generous helping of mayonnaise. Have a look here at the Genius range http://www.geniusglutenfree.com/.

Now I know for some people Starbucks is right up there with McDonald’s and KFC as the devil’s favourite chain and the fact that you can’t go 20 yards without being able to get a WhoppafrappaAlpacino  is just too much for some people to cope with. However, I say cheers Starbucks as you have brightened up my lunchtime. I hope other chains follow and soon I might also be munching on an egg mayo sarnie or a cheese and ham baguette.  I’m salivating at just the thought.
